OPUA ROAD SCHOOL. EiUCHRE AND DANCE SOCIAL. (From Our Own Correspondent). A euchre and dance social was held in the Opua Road school last Tuesday evening and was well attended. The prizes for euchre were won ) y Miss P. Newman and Mr. L. Newman. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Mns. C. Haskell and Mr. A. Calendar.

At intervals during the dancing a song was given by Mr. L. Boss and a recitation by Mr. H. Urbhan. Supper was served by the ladies. Mr. F. Newman supplied the dance music and Mr. D. Lockley carried out the duties of M.C. BELIEF COMMITTEE. On Monday afternoon the ladies of the relief committee . held a sewing bee at the residence of Mrs B. Bitchie. A number of warm children's garments were made and these are to be distributed to the needy immediately. CYCLE ACCIDENT. A nasty accident befell Mr B. Boss last Thursday evening while cycling to football practice. He was coming down the Ihaia Road when the lower bar of the cycle snapped throwing him heavily on the road. He sustained injuries to his shoulder and wrist, necessitating medical attention. UNEMPLOYED. Unemployment- in dike Egmont County has- shown a slight increase over the figures for last month. At present 80 men are receiveing relief work on farms under the No. 4A scheme. Under the No. 5 scheme, a total of 62 men are working: part time, all these being engaged by the local bodies. IHAIA. BOAD SOCIAL. Despite very rough weather conditions a large number of residents of the Ihaia Boad attended a euchre social held in that schoolroom on Monday night. Prizes for the euchre were won by Miss Bradley and Mr. H. Tobeck.

Opportunity was also taken to welcome to the district Mr Lee, who lias taken over the school. Mr. H. lobeck (secretary of the school committee') m welcoming Mr Lee on behalf of the residents of the road and the school committee, assured him of the goodwill of all and also said he felt sure that when Mrs Lee arrived she would also be very welcome. The speaker hoped Mrs. Lee would he xileased with this part of the country. Mr. Lee, in reply, said lie was very favourably impressed with the school and surrounding district. He expressed thanks for the warm welcome accorded him and felt sure that he and otheis interested in the school could work together in unison. . Community singing was then enjoyed and Mr. M. Bradley sang two solos. Miss M. Bradley acted as accompanist. A dainty supper was served by the ladies’ committee.

PERSONAL. Mr E Iv. Cameron, late headmaster of the K-ohuratahi school, lias arrived in Onunake from where he will cairy out his duties as headmaster oi the ‘Opua Boad school. SOCIAL EVENINGS. On Tuesday night a large number of members and friends of the Catho-

lic Young People’s Club were present at a social held- in St. Patrick’s Hall. A very pleasant time was spent in playing ping pong and other games and competitions. Supper was. served by the ladies. CRIB EVENING. The weeklv cribbage evening w£us held by the Opunalie Bowling Club in its social room on Tuesday evening, a large number of bowlers and friends being present. Supper was served by the committee. The winner was Mr. F. Sisley, with Mr. C. Fraser second. SURF CLUB DANCE. Owing to the very boisterous weather the attendance at the Town Hall on Wednesday night for the Serf Club’s hall was disappointing. As a result of the club’s efforts, however, the Bed Cross Relief Committee should benefit by the sum of about £4 or £5. ■ ~ „ , The music was supplied by the Upunake Star Marimba Dance Band. Supper (donated by the residents of the district) was served by a ladies’ committee- consisting of Mesdames R. S. Jenkin, E. Jenkins, J. Hickey, J. Clouston, R. McCullum, O. Edmonds, C H Marcroft, R. Ritchie, J. N. Stephenson. F. Hammond, G. Hammond and Misses D. Clouston and I. Lewis During an interval between the dancing Mr. J. N. Stephenson, oil behalf of the organisers, thanked those present for their patronage. He also specially thanked members of the orfor their services, which had hen oiven free, also Mr. C. H. Marcroft, Mr. Whiting and all those who had helped, by work and donations towards the supper.
