MINE CONFERENCE ADJOURNS
OWNERS INSIST ON CONDITION POWERS OF MANAGERS (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 24. A conference of coal owners and miners of the northern district convened to negotiate a new working agreement resumed to-day. When it first met on May' 6 the owners refused to- begin deliberations until the miners at Hik-urangi had returned to work. The Hikurangi men resumed on May 16, but since then had struck again demanding that notice of dismissal served on 55 men should be withdrawn.
When the conference met this morning the owners intimated they' would not proceed with the discussion of a new agreement until the. unions agreed that a manager of a mine shall have the right to shorten hands, at any T time at his own discretion. The union representatives retired to consider this intimation. At lunch time it was learned that the men had reached no decision on the owners’ condition, but had framed proposals for submission to the owners this afternoon. These -proposals the men believed would be acceptable.
