BOMB OUTRAGE AT SHANGHAI
ANOTHER VICTIM SUCCUMBS. JAPANESE GENERAL’S DEATH. (United Pres* Association—By Electric Tele graph copyright.) SHANGHAI, May 23. General Shirakawa, who was injured in the recent bombing, died to-, day about noon. The Japanese authorities refrain from announcing tiie death; they state the patient’s condition is grave. They have, howex er, suspended social functions. _ They will not announce the death until the body is aboard the cruiser Hirato, which will leave to-morrow for Tolao. General Shirakawa, who ivas Com-niander-in-Chief of the Japanese adventure at Shanghai, was elevated to be a baron directly the Emperor was advised of tlie seriousness of bis condition.
The bombing occurred during a military review in llonkew Park on Aprn 29 in honour of the J apanese Emperor’s birthday, in which 10,090 Japanese troops participated. Bombs were thrown on the platform on which were seated the principal Japanese officials. The injured were Mr. Smgemitsu, Japanese Minister to China, Mr. Murai, Japanese Consul-General, General Shirakawa, Commander-in-Chief of the military forces, Admiral Nomura, naval Commander-in-Chief, Admiral Sliiinada, Major-General 'ieshiro, and Mr. ivawubata, a civilian intelligence oliicer. Mr. Kawabata and Mr. Shigemitsu died a few days later. Troops surrounded the park, preventing thousands of spectators from leaving. Seven persons were arrested, including the foreign park keeper, one Chinese and five Koreans. One of the latter was almost lynched by an indignant mob of Japanese. A Korean, believed to be the bomb-thrower, was so severely manhandled that lie subsequentlv died. The three Chinese arrested" were also battered unmercifully. The chief damage was caused by a hand grenade which when it exploded stunned officials and people within a radius of 20 yards. As a result of the outrage the Japanese declared martial law in the northern district and the state of tension the possibility of peace talk.
