NEW PLYMOUTH TOURNEY. SEMI-FINALS REACHED. Weatlier conditions were again good for tne, continuation of the tennis tournament at New Plymouth yesterday, and play was pushed ahead so well in the cdampionsliip events that the semi-finals were reached in three events—the men’s singles and doubles and the boys’ singles, while the other events were well ahead. Semi-finals and finals mil be played to-day. Additional interest was lent to the tourney by the arrival yesterday of the Wellington crack, A. L. France, and lie began liis play by beating = Hubble (Auckland) and C. B. Webster , (New Plymouth) in the singles. 1 Miss Pease, of Hawera, has done j well, and will play Miss M. Gibson 1 (Christchurch) to-day to decide the ’ player to go into one of the semi- ’ finals. i In the girl’s singles Miss Ward, lias come through to one semi-final, and . will meet tfie winner of the Miss , Graham v. Miss AVylds match. The other semi-final will be fought out bei tween the winner of the Miss Badiarry v. Miss Jean Ward match and the winner of the Miss Ritter v. Miss Brodie match. France was in his best form, and won easily from Hubble, but had a harder struggle in the second set against Webster. His consistency and good placing were, however, much superior. One of the best contests of the day was the meeting in the championship doubles of G. Wills (Hawera) and A. G. Wallaace (Waverley) and Rhodes Williams (Wellington) and Richards (New Plymouth). The former pair ran out .winners after a, strenuous contest by 10 —8, 6—4. Features of the match were the brilliant net play _of the winners and the hard driving from the baseline of Williams. The first set went to five all, and then alternately each pair won a- game, and altogether 18 were, played before Wallace and Wills got the vantage game and won 10—8. The winners went away with a strong lead in the second set, and won four before their opponents made a start. They then ( came to light with brilliant play and ( won the next three. In a fighting ( finish they were beaten 6 —4. There ] were great- displays in several other £ doubles matches, the two Auckland ] pains, Hubble and Entwistle, Stedman , brothers, YVebster and Ellis all bav- ( ins to fight hard to win tlieir mat elms. ( Keen interest has been shown in ( the boys’ and girls’ singles, in which - A. Dickie, of Waverley, and Miss Peggy Wylds, of Eltham, are showing ‘ specially fine form.
