OTTAWA, Sept. 14. Early returns- show Liberal gains in the eastern provinces, where eight out of nine changes favour the Liberal Progressives. Mr. Donald Sutherlanda Minister, and Mr. 'Bateaux, SolicitorGeneral, are defeated, but Mr. Stevens, Minister of Customs, who was prominent in connection with the Customs investigation which was made one of the chief issues of the campaign, was reelected for the Vancouver constituency, which lie has represented foi- many years. His actions in connection with the United. States Oil Cbmpiainy, ill which he at one time' was interested, were bitterly attacked by.the liberals throughout the country during the past week. - Mr. Dunning, ex-Minister of Railways, has been re-elected, and Mr. Tolmie, Minister, of Agriculture, has been ire-elected for Victoria. Mr. Mackenzie King, was re-elected for Prince Albert.

Including the Prime Minister, Mr. Meighen, six Ministers have been defeated, some of the others being Messrs. E. Li. Batenaude, Minister of Justice; Eugene Parquet, Minister of Health and Soldiers’ Civil Re-establish-ment; and Dr. Mo rand, Minister without portfolio. The Liberals '.are gaining in. all the grovinces except British Columbia'. Sir eorge Perley, Secretary of State, was the only Minister who survived in Quebec and the maritime provinces. Mr. W. A. Black, Minister of Railways, Mr. George Jones, Minister of Labour, and Mr. John McDonald, Minister without portfolio, were returned by much .smaller majorities than, last year. Mr] Robb, Minister of Trade and Commerce ini the former Liberal _ Ministry, has been re-elected. He visited Australia and assisted in framing the trade treaty with the Commonwealth. Returns up to midnight indicated a swing toward, the liberals with the possibility of the return, of Mr. Kin°; to power through the help of the Progressive fusionists. of the western provinces. Mr. W. McLean, the Dean of the House of Commons (of which be has been a member .since 1892) was defeated by a Conservative. Mr. King’s election in Saskatchewan is conceded. but Mi-. Meighen-.is running behind in Portage-la-Prairie. Mr.' Harry Stevens, the initiator of the Customs investigation, was elected in British CMumbia. An earlier message from Ottawa stated a preliminary general canvass of the election returns shows that of 70 constituencies the. Conservatives have captured 42, Liberal® 26, Progressive Fusionists 2, and the present indications are 'that unless big changes occur in Ijhe West, the .situation will -resole itself into another stalemate, no party having a clear majority. Earlier return® in Eastern Canada indicate three Liberal gains in, Ontario, while the Quebec representation so far remains, unchanged. Deputy-Speaker Duff was defeated by a Conservative in Nova Scotia, and Donald Sutherland, a Minister without portfolio in the Meighen Cabinet, was defeated, while Mr. Fauteux, SolicitorGeneral, suffered his third defeat in Quebec. / Mr. ,A. J. Boueet (Conservative) whose name is a household word, due to the sensational charges' concerning leading Liberals joy-riding .aboard a Canadian Government steamer, was defeated .
