SINKING OF H 29.
LIEUTENANT GUILTY OF NEGLIGENCE. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received 2.10 p.m. to-day. LONDON, Sept. 14. A court-martial found- Lieut. Wevell, second in command of submarine H 29, guilty of negligence, and) dismissed him from bis ship. . The court found that Wevell should 1 have given individual orders, regarding the closing of the hatches, and taken immediate steps to- rectify the mistake when a, pretty officer named Aske. who was in charge- of the tanks during the trimming, flooded them. The- disaster was a. direct result of this negligence. Aske gave evidence that "Wevell told him to put some water in numbers two and three, the. main tanks. The hatches were then open. Foreseeing danger, ho wais already closing the tanks- when Wevell gave the order to stop flooding. Lieutenant-Commander Barry gave evidence that there were no definite written orders -prohibiting the flooding of the main tanks with the hatches open; hut- it was not safe.
White undergoing repairs -at Devoirport early last month, submarine H 29 sank in 25 feet of water. One artificer and four dockyard workmen- were drowned.
