LISTENERS-IN AT WELLINGTON
(by TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 9. The opening of the Auckland broadcasting station was disappointing to Wellington listeners-in. Until abovft 8.45 reception was fairly strong, but at no time was it equal in strength to Brisbane, The Hon. AY. Norworthy’s speech was distinctly heard except when the cruiser Dunedin, -at the wharf here, broke ini' with Alorse .signals, but as the evening went cn the Auckland, station began to fade and often became inaudible. Therfe is a. great complaint about interference by H.AI.S. Dunedin since she (berthed here, ancl .subscribers consider that .she could defer her signals to a more .suitable time. LAKE COLERIDGE POAVER. STATION. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 9. The Prime Afinister (the Rt. Hon. •J. G. Coates), and the. Afinister of Public AYorks (the Hon. K. S. Williams), accompanied by a large official party, left Christchurch this morning for Lake Coleridge to open important extensions of the power plant. Air Coates attends the Grand National meeting to-morrow, returning to Wellington the same evening. KNOCKED DOAYN BY AIOTOR CAR, AVANGANUI, Aug. 9. James Wm. McDougall, single, aged 38. 'who avas found lying on the roadside on Somme Parade at 3 o’clock yesterday morning in an unconscious condition. bad been knocked off a bicycle by a motor car about an hour earlier. He had sustained' terrible injuries. He was admitted to hospital, 'and' died about 5 a.m. The police later located the driver of the car, who wiais totally unaware of the accident.
STRUCK BY A HAWSER.
INVERCARGILL', Aug. 9. AATxile the steamer Port Campbell was mooring at Bluff on Sunday afternoon. a hawser carried away and struck Daniel' McQuarrie, a Harbour Board employee, fracturing his leg and lacerating his head. His condition is critical. FATAL END TO SKYLARKING. INVERCARGILL, Aug. 9. At the inquest concerning the circumstances surrounding the death of Wm. lan Kane, who was drowned in the Kawarau River, FVancis Higgle said that they wore skylarking on a ledge when Kane over-balanced. AVitness tried to save him and both fell in. He (witness) caught a wire and nulled himself ashore, but the deceased was carried down and when the body was recovered life was extinct, A. verdict of accidental death was returned.
