ADJOURNS TILL NOVEMBER. LABOUR PROPOSAL DEFEATED. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYBIGHT. Received 1.30 p.m. to-day. LONDON, Aug. 4. The House of Commons, by 173 to 48 votes, defeated a Labourite proposal to adiourn for the summer recess till August 17 instead of November 9, m view of the coal stopnage. Labourites contended that the situation might change during the next three weeks, and the House should be' in session in order to effect a peaceful settlement. Sir Austen Chamberlain said that 16 days of uarliarnentary time had been devoted to coal discussions without powerfully contributing to a solution, of the dismite, which could only be ended bv the parties thereto. Thereafter a practically empty House, on the motion for the adjournment, debated Anglo-American, debt settlement, coal stoppage and other matters.
The House of Commons meets at brief intervals at the end of August, September and October to renew the emergency regulations if the dispute is still in existence.
