The House of Commons, by 173 to 48 votes, defeated a Labourite proposal to adiourn for the summer recess till August 17 instead of November 9, m view of the coal stopnage. Labourites contended that the situation might change during the next three weeks, and the House should be' in session in order to effect a peaceful settlement. Sir Austen Chamberlain said that 16 days of uarliarnentary time had been devoted to coal discussions without powerfully contributing to a solution, of the dismite, which could only be ended bv the parties thereto. Thereafter a practically empty House, on the motion for the adjournment, debated Anglo-American, debt settlement, coal stoppage and other matters.
