WRECK OF THE MANAIA.
EVIDENCE CiONCIEfRiNIN.G STRONG SET. (BT TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, June 23. Further evidence of the existence'of a strong set towards land -was given when the Nautical Court of Inquiry concerning the wreck of' the steamer Manaia .ait Slipper Island continued its sifting. “I have evidence of this ~set,_” said Mr. A. Moody, who appeared for the master (Captain Norbury) and. the third officer (iMr. J. Hare) at a later; stage in the proceedings. “1. have just had a message from my office (I do not know what the effect of it will be) that the City of Winchester has just arrived, and that in. a run of 113 miles she wais taken 18 miles inward by a strong set. Would the court adjourn, so that 1. could call the evidence of the master ” The chairman, Mr. E. Cutten, S.M., agreed and an adjournment, of fifteen minutes (was taken. “I am. afraid 1 cannot produce the evidence of* the captain of the City of Winchester,” said Mr. Moody at the expiry of the .adjournment. It does not matter, said Mr. Cutten, ‘‘there is sufficient evidence of the ket.” The court, after 'hearing counsel’s addresses, intimated that its decision would ibe delivered to-morrow morning.
