OPUNAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) On Friday evening a juvenile fancy dress ball was held in the Town Hall in aid of the-town queen (Miss B. Johnston) candidate in the Federal Band queen carnival. About forty children were present in fancy dress. The pride-ivinners were as follow: Best fancy dress. —Boys. Don Clare (Indian); special, Leith Watt (Highlander). Girls: Jean McCollum (Roman Soldier); special, June Campbell (Bride). Most original.—Boys: E. Clegg (Opunake Harbour). Girls; X. Andrews (Umbrella). Best paper character.—Girls: Mavis Lyttle (Old English). Boys: M. Andrews (Herald) Other special prizes were awarded as follows: Dawn Holmes (Bluebird), Joyce Bishop (Pierette), Esther Smith (Muila), Thelma Goad (Basket of Roses). Orchestral music was supplied by. members of the band. Supper was provided by the- ladies’ committee. The judges of the fancy dress were Mesdames Church and Edmonds. A record attendance- was present at the Arawhata school on Friday evening, when the Primary School Shield was presented by the secretary of the Egmont School Sports Association ‘(Mr. W. M. Burgess) to the school, which won it at the recent sports. Mr. G/ Bevan, the chairman of the school committee, accepted it on behalf -of the Arawliata school. Musical items and songs were given during the evening, and a good supper was provided by the ladies’ committee. Orchestral music was supplied by Messrs G. Brunette, V. Hickey, and J. Williamson. Air. G. Bevan acted as M.C. . On, Monday evening the directors of the Opunake Dairy Co. invited the suppliers and general public to the official opening of their? new , factory. The building is a -substantial one, compact, with four vats, and' when- completely furnished will be up to date in all respects. The well-known contractor, Mr Symmons, -designed and erected' the building. Messrs Mac Ewen, whose tender for equipping the factory with) machinery was accepted, will commence immediately to instal same. The ooet ■of , the building ivas £3OOO. Mr W. L. F. Chambers, chairman of directors, welcomed’ the public (about? 300 were -present), and apologies from the' Hon. O. J. Ha.wken, Messrs Singleton , Wright, D. Markham, M. J. Ma-cßeynolds and J. White ivere received.'

The main room was decorated with’ coloured streamers and’ special electric lights. Dancing, interspersed withi songs, was continued until midnight. A supper was also provided, and it was generally agreed l that it -had. been ai moot enjoyable evening. The Waiteaka branch factory of the Pi ham a Daiz-y Co. is now being considerably unproved. The building will be enlarged by an, additional 12 feet, and the plant assembled in one room/.
