The winter meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club concluded under ideal climatic conditions .and, as was only to be expected, the attendance was very large, and' speculation brisk, so altogether this club must have had a profitable meeting. After running .prominently for nearly a mile in the Havelock Hurdles, Ruby Ring burst a blood vessel. ONE TO MATU. Of the moderate, lot that contested the Havelock Hurdles, Matu (£513) counted on, most support from Ruby Ring and Mixed Heather. When the barrier rose, Ruby Ring began best to lead over the initial jump from Polyas tra. and Peshwa. Passing the stand Polyas tra was in charge from Ruby Ring, Pcsliwa. and Matu. Racing up the back Polyastra was still leading from Pcsliwa and Royal Heather. Half a mile from: home Mixed Heather fell when going well, rind Polyastra, Pcishwa; were just in front, of Matu at the •final obstacle. Once over Matu put in a good' run to beat Royal Heather nicely, with Polyastra and Peshwa close up. SANTIAGO ’S HURDLES. Ofl a useful class that competed :‘n the Turamoei Hurdles, Santiago (£520) was a good favourite from Comedy Prince (£367) and Saai Per a. (£363). At the first jump San Pera led Comical and Brigadier Bill, and passing the stand Good Sport was just in front of San Pera and Brigadier Bill. Racing up the back stretch, San. Fern again took the lead, with Brigadier Bill and Good Sport following. At the; last jump, Santiago had/ run through to join San Fera, and over the last furlong drew out to beat Comedy Prince by four lengths, with Brigadier Bill another two lengths away, and Merry Singer and San Pera next. A DECIDED FAVOURITE. On the strength of .his good but unlucky showing at Napier Park, Llandudno (£1666) was a decided favourite from Polar (£528) and Vivo (£376). in the Kidnappers’ Hack. When, the barrier rose, Merry Imp began smartly to lead Vivo and' Tino Maunga over the early stages. At the home turn, Merry 'lmp was just in. front of Tino Maunga, Polar and Black Rock. In the straight Tino 'Maunga. took charge, and R.. Reed had to bring all his riding ability into play on Polar to head Tino Maunga- off. Jubilee was a poor third, just in front of Vivo. SINGLE-DIVIDEND EVENT. The scratching of Red Cent- reduced the June Steeples to an event of a .single dividend. Bettors went for Sturdee (£734), but Passin’ Thru’ .(£631) and the bracketed pair (Woden and Kovo) £564 were also supported. At the initial fence Sturdee led Woden., Uncle Dave and Silent Dick. Passing the stand the first, time there was no alteration of positions except for the fact, that Kovno feiT. Up the back for the last time, Sturdce. held a good lea.ct from Passin’ Thru’ and Woden, the last named falling heavily at the lien coop and Passin’ Thru’ losing many lengths at the sod wall. At the last fence, Sturdee was going- very easily in front and beat Passin’ Thru’ by six lengths, with the tired Uncle Dave nearly a furlong away, the only other horse to finish. FOfßiElliG'N ALL THE WAY. When the barrier rose for the Ladies’ Bracelet, Foreign began well, and passing the stand was followed by Pehswa, Arch, Salute and Mint Julep. Racing up the back stretch, Foreign was six lengths clear of Beshwa and Hillation. Racing into the straight, Foreign .just led Hillation,, but, tire last named came on to win nice from Perle de Leon, which, came from the clouds. Foreign was third and 'Good Mark fourth. WON EASILY. Iu the Rnukawa Handicap the betting public selected Cohesion (£1037) as favourite from Bennanee (£803), with Son o’ Mine (£450) and Crishna next. 'The tape rose to a good start, Son o’ Mine leading out of the straight from Tokoroa and Bennanee. Racing up the back, Bennanec took charge from Cohesion, Strongholt and Son o’ Mine. At the home turn, Bennanee had a useful lead from Strongholt, Cohesion and Crishna, and in tho run up the straight Bennanee ran on well to win easily by two lengths from Cohesion, which just beat Crishna by a head and Othon right up in fourth place. WEAK FIELD FOR THE LAST. Por the Final Handicap backers made Huikaia (£1157) first fancy in a weak field, others well supported being Wristlet (£IO7S), OlyiVipic (£561), and Watchman (£556). When the barrier rose, Wristlet began best from Startle and Huikai. At the half-mile post, Watchman was in charge, and he led Startle and Huikai into the straight. Over the last Half furlong Huikai finished best to beat Olympic by three lengths, with Wristlet two lengths away next, followed by Morose and Watchman. The amount passed through the totalisator to-day was £20,583 against £16,118 last year, and for the meeting the totalisator figures showed an increase of £5791 over last year.
