McWhirter, E. H. Thomas, J. Lewis, J. D. McKay, - • Kemp, and C-. Taplin. MUNICIPAL LIGHTING. The Power Board wrote stating that it had been decided that the board could not see its way clear to reduce the price for lights for the Town Hall.—l lu Mayor explained that he had, at the wish of the Town Hall and Picture Committee, waited upon the board with the view of getting a reduced price for the current used in connection with the now Town Hull installation, and tlic reply was the outcome. The price charged the council was the same as charged the ordinary cottage up to £fe. All in excess of this was to receive a discount of 10 per cent. This meant that there would be no allowance at all as it was not anticipated that they would use over £8 per month. The lighting system would invoke about zUU lamps, and he thought the council, which was already a big customer of the board (paying £4BO per annum for. its street, lighting), should receive some special consideration. Cr. ’ Taplin (chairman of the Town Hall Committee) said that he was greatly disappointed at'the decision of the board, as the council deserved better consideration. He suggestion that the council might install its own wutci* power for the Town Hall requirements. Cr. McKay also contended that the council was entitled to better treatment. He complained about the state of the street lamps, stating that the light was not what-it should be. Yet the council had not complained and had always treated the board with consideration. Cr. Lewis moved, and Cr. Taplin seconded, that the mater be referred to the Town Hall committee with power to act. The motion was carried. PUBLIC HEALTH.

He had been watching the matter very carefully and saw no cause for. alarm*, but it was always well to be prepared. He then moved that the council go into committee, and on resuming it was reported that the matter was referred to the general committee of the council, with power to add to its number from the doctors, Hospital Board , representative, and County Council. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Taplin, it was decided to apply to the Hawera Hospital Board for two hospital stretchers for the permanent use cf the borough. WHITE NEW ZEALAND. The secretary of the White New Zealand League wrote asking the council to support the aims and objects of the League, which are briefly the conservation of New Zealand as a country for the European race. The League did not desire to discriminate against Indians because they were Indians, or against Chinese because they were Chinese. The principle involved was not racial, but economic. The Mayor, in moving that the council suport the restriction against the immigration of Asiatics into New Zealand, said that the question was a very difficult one, as some of them were British subjects. Nevertheless their ideals and standards of life were different from ours aiul avc should protect our citizens from the danger of intermarriage with such types. Cr.
