The sudden death of Mr -Nelson Illingworth, a noted sculptor, is reported in a message from Sydney. The death is reported from Auckland, at the age of 7.°. years, of Mrs E. L. McKinney, mother of Mrs A. B. Chappell and of Mr C. A. McKinney, of Now Plymouth. The New Zealand and Oxford athlete, A. 20. Porritt, is to marry Miss Mollie Bond, a relative of Mr Ncames, of Wanganui, on July 1, states a London cable. Mi. N. H. C. Caplen left Hawera on Saturday’s south express, en route to Auckland. A crowd of his many friends assembled at the railway station to bid him farewell.

Mr W. A. Curteis, who has resigned his position as organising teacher to the Taranaki Education Board (Stratford Centre), has been appointed to the headmastership of the Te Hapara School, Gisborne, and takes up his new duties on July 1. A London cablegram announces that Sir Patrick Hastings, K.C., who is M.P. for Wallsend, and was AttorneyGeneral in Mr. MacDonald’s Ministry, lias decided to give up Parliamentary working owing to ill-health. A tribute 'was paid at the annual meeting of the Taranaki Bowling Centre on Saturday to the great work done by Mr F. J. Hill, of New Plymouth, as secretary, the president stating that it was largely diie to his organising work that the centre was in such a good position. He was voted an honorarium of 30 guineas. The resignation of Cr E. H. Thomas was received at the monthly meeting of the Eltham Borough'Council on Friday., In moving that it ;be accepted With sincere regret and! that appreciation be recorded in the Council’s minutes, the Mayor (Mr I. J. Bridger) said that Cr; Thomas had served on the council for about six years; and had rendered good service. He regretted they were losing Cr Thomas as a councillor and as a citizen. All the members of the council endorsed the Mayor’s remarks, and Cr Thomas suitably replied.

The deatln of Mrs. E Joyce, of K;aponga, occurred! at her residence on the Manaia. Road at about 8 o’clock this morning Though her health has been indifferent for some; time, her condition was not regarded as serious, and her decease was unexpected. - She. was attended by the doctor on Friday, ibut appeared, to have recovered; yesterday and was proceeding about her lio#sebouldi duties this morning, when she collapsed suddenly and expired within a few moments. Mrs. Joyce; is survived by her husband, five son's, and a daughter. Mr Joyce recently disposed of his farming interests at K-aponga and the family were to have moved this week to Eltham. Sincere .sympathy from; a wide circle of friends will he felt with the bereaved relatives.
