March 30. •‘Commercial probity has decayed owing to opportunities lor getting rich quickly afforded in certain quarters by the Great War,” says the Home Office in its review of crime for 19*24. This showed that the number of cases of frauds totalled 10,24/., as compared with an average of 7453 for the five -years ending 1923.
The report continues: “The increase in shopbreaking, larceny, and fraud was largely due to reckless attempts to live more or less luxuriously, which is also traceable to wartime experiences.”
The Morning Post, commenting on the report, says : “If the Home Office’s suggestion refers to the contracts of the Ministry of Munitions in the 4'onlition Government, it is another meet of the many-sided question of Mate Socialism,” and adds: “The iuJeases prove that the lighter sengiven, crinilinals Constitute n iehl social danger.” —Sydney Sun Cable.
