OBITUARY.
MRS. AiNINIFi JOHNSTON
The death occurred yesterday at her :residence, Mangiipoua. Road, Nor riianby, of Mrs. Annie Johnston, widow of the late Cusislett Johmstoiy at the age of 71 years. Writing of her hie, our Tokaona. correspondent says.: “One bv one the pioneers) pass to the Great Be vo nd. Early this morning there passed away Mrs. Annie Johnston, relicit of a pioneer and Maori war - hero, who has lived at her home, on land gradually extended by purchp.se, which had been granted to the veteran for his war services, a unique instance in land transactions of late years. On Sunday, Llth in,st., 1 paid my regular visit to my old friend and her family. She occupied her usual seat, chatting as of yore. I. noticed >a slight failing, but did not expect that the end was so near. To write her life history is only to recount the hard up-and-dtown struggles of the women of our pioneering days. Entering her home, the visitor was received with the greatest cordiality and. her presence threw a halo of peace, happiness, and contentment on the surroundings. She wasi a devout and faithful member of her church, ever ready to assist those in need of material or spiritual support. She was a good w,ife and loving mother She leaves two sfins, Harry and William, also a daughter, Miss Alice Johnston —her faithful comforter to the eiK l land three grandsons) to mourn their loss. One daughter, Mrs Bourke, predeceased her by some years. One son Edward, paid the Supreme Sacrifice in the Great War. He gained the Military Medal. She was a good neighbour and a noble minded woman; J add my tribute—“ Peace to her efforts.”
