MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
ELTHAM SITTING. The fortnightly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Eltliam was held today, Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., pro siding. ‘ ‘ TEMPTING HOTEL-KEEPERS. ’ ’ Stanley Riley, Edgar Watson and Clarence Hill, of Te Kiri, were charged with being found after hours on the licensed premises of the Dominion Hotel, Kaponga. Sergeant Henry conducted police proceedings.' Constable O’Donoghue " deposed to having found the three defendants in the back yard of the hotel atj) p.m. on November 11. When questioned by the constable, they had admitted they were trying to get liquor. "This is one of the men who tempt the hotelkeeper at the back door,” said the Magistrate in dealing with the first case called. Mr. A. A. Stewart, who appeared for Watson, submitted that the defendant was only 17 years of age, and though in company with the other two was not there for the purpose of procuring liquor, but the Magistrate intimated that the excuse could not be accepted. x A fine of £2 and 12s costs was imposed in each case. CIVIL ACTION. Judgment for defendant by default was given in each of the following undefended civil cases: — T. Forsyth, assignee in the estate of E. C. Gcldstone, formerly of Eltham, v. Norman Gray, Ngaere, £1 19s (costs 14s); Egmont Box Co. v. Australasian Manufacturing Co., £3 19s 2d (£1 3s 6d); C. A. Belcher, Eltham, v. A. C. Wilmshurst, £ls (£2); Ira J. Bridger, Eltham, v. A. E. Belk, Midhirst, £9 (£1 10s (id); John Walsh, Eltham v. George Mumby, Stratford, £lB (£2 14s). On a judgment summons A. H. Russell was ordered to pay Cecil C. Stanners the sum of £0 Is Sd forthwith, in default to undergo 5 days’ imprisonment.
