PERSONAL ITEMS.

Mr L. 0. Hooker, who has been indisposed, is a patient in Craigholin/ Hospital. He is reported to he getting on well. Mrs. T. Bowen, of Union Street, Hawera, is at present an inmate of Craigholm private hospital. A Press Association message from Christchurch states that Mr Ewart Somers, of Perth, West Australia, has been appointed assistant city engineer for Christchurch.

At the annual meeting of the Hawera Operatic Society regret was expressed by members at the illness of Mr H. Briggs, a former member. The secretary will write conveying best wishes to him for a speedy recovery.

At the Hawera Municipal Band’s weekly practise last evening a vote of condolence with the widow 'of the late Mr. R, D. Welsh, who was a vice-president of the band committee, was passed; all the members standing in silence.

Miss Gwen Gibbs, who was well known a s a dancing teacher in Wellington, has recently come to live in Hawera, and it is probable that she will continue her profession in the district.

Mr. H. S. Wagstaff, who has been well and favourably known to the farming community in North Tatranaki for some time a s a member of the outside staff of the Farmers’ Co-op. Organisation Society, has been appointed the society’s manager in New Plymouth.

Special mention of the good' work' done for the Hawera Operatic Society by Mr J. G. Osborne was made at the annual meeting last night. Since the inception of the society until he left Hawera, Mr Osborne had' been hon. secretary and business manager, and had given a great deal of time and thought and close attention to its affairs.

The engagement is announced of Elva May, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. M. C. Heatley, of nake, to Eric Marshall, third son of J Mr. and Mrs. H. Walden, of Greytown, Wairarapa. The many friends of Mr. V. B. Stratton, secretary to the Egmont Racing Club, will regret to know that he is at present indisposed and confined to his home. Mr. E. P. Cbx is acting as secretary until Mr. Stratton resumes duty.

Mr. T. J. Salmon, of Hawera, has accepted the position of manager for Messrs Newton King, Ltd., for this district. He has arranged to assume the new position about the middle ofi January. Mr. Salmon will be relinquishing the position he. now holds of secretary to five co-operative dairy companies—Normanby, Mells, Ararata, Meremere, and Melrose. Mr. S. S. Dean, chairman of the Rugby Union, has received, a cable message from tthe (Secretary of the New South Wales Union stating that Dick McGregor died on Saturday.: Twenty years ago he was a very' wellknown player from the Thames, and had represented New Zealand. He contracted miners’ phthisis, and this was responsible for his death, says a Wellington Press Association message. Mr. H. E. Johnson, of Tokaoray who went south to attend the Royal Show, and afterwards to judge the Friesiaus at the Dunedin Show, has returned to Hawera. He reports that the stock exhibited at the Royal Show was generally very good and of high quality. The Shorthorn and Friesian' sections were specially good. At Dunedin he found the section lie had to judge very good indeed, showing that the Friesian breeders were out to get the best stud stock possible. He had altogether a most interesting time in the south. At an enthusiastic gathering at .: Auckland Sir James Gunson, in recognition of his ten yeans’ service as Mayor of Auckland, was . presented with a silver model of the war memorial museum, an illuminated address, and a' cheque for an agricultural scholarship to bear his name, and Lady Gunson was presented with a baby grand piano. Mr. George Bdildon (Mayor) said all citizens were satisfied that Sir James had done more for the city than anyone of his generation. There were higher duties and it was often suggested that he might go on until he became Prime Minister of the Dominion. Sir Edwin Micbelson also paid a tribute to Sir James Gunson’s services. Sir Janies Gunson, in replying, said his term of office had been one of unalloyed happiness. In the lifetime of Sir Edwin Mitchelson Auckland had grown from a small village on the water’s edge to the splendid city of today. That in itself was a wonderful thing, but lie believed the city was merely passing from youth to manhood, and building on that foundation, the prospect for the future was indeed bright. '
