Tlie Hon. R. F. Bollard (Minister of Internal Affairs) will officially open the Stratford A. and P. Show at 1.15 p.m. on People’s Day, Thursday next. The Rev. L. O. H. Barbour, of Opawa, Christchurch, has accepted a. call to the ministry* of tlie , Hawera. Baptist congregation, and will be taking over his duties here early in. February.
■Mrs. McGhie left Hawera. by the mail train this morning for AVellington. She will leave by the Makura for Sydney to-morrow and will there meet Dr. McGhie on his return from abroad.
At Saturday’s meeting of the Stratford County Council a resolution was passed congratulating Mr. AValter on his recent election to Parliament. A resolution of thanks was accorded to Mr. R. Masters for his past services in the interests of the county and the district.
Mr. Mark Sutherland, who has been associated with the Melbourne Clothing Company for eleven years, and for several years has had charge of the Hawera branch, has resigned from the firm and intends entering business on his own account at Taihape. ’
A tribute to the late Mr. R,. D'. Welsh, was paid by the Rlev. H. W. Monaghan, in the course of his, short address in St. Mary’s Church on Saturday. He referred to the honoured position held by Mr. Welsh in his profession and said that t-lie respect in which he was held by the citizens of' the town and district was the greatest tribute to his character. He added that the parishioners of St. Mary’s offered their heart-felt 'Sympathy in their sorrow to hi,s widow and relations. A Press Association message from Wellington stated that Captain Archibald West, Marine Superintendent for the Commonwealth and Dominion Line, collapsed while walking along Oriental Parade with his wife last night. He died almost immediately. He was 45 years of age. There was no ilyThe death has occurred) in Wellington of Mr Herbert Martin, who saw service with the New Zealand - Medical Corps and, on his return from the front, was for several years resident in Hawera,, where he was a member of Harrop’s drapery staff. Mr Martin, whose mother, lives in Wellington, had suffered a long illness. In Hawera he was a member of the Returned Soldiers’ Association and of the Druids’ Lodge. Miss Averill, of Auckland, who is a district commissioner of the Girl Guides movement, visited Eltham on Saturday morning and was welcomed on behalf of the local association by the Mayor (Mr. I. j. Bridger). She was also entertained at morning tea by Mrs. T. B. Crump. Miss Averill addressed the ladies assembled and stressed the objects of the movement in helping to mould the girls into worthycitizens. She inspected the troop of Girl Guides and enrolled Mrs. R. Poord as captain.
