STRONG MAN MARVELS.
SOME GREAT RECORDS
There is a. new strong man in Canada. - One lias always been there, of course, but ■it is only lately that he lias niade hiniiscif knoivu. He is a member of. the provincial police force of the Province of Quebec, and his name is Arthur Giroux. He looks the part, and, if he can be believed, the other strong men in Quebec Province at least, who have been stars for some years now, will have to look to their laurels. ’ , Giroux claims, that he can better almost all tlie records of Louis Cyr and Horace Havre. Cyr died some years ago; Barre more recently. The last-named was also in the employ of th e Quebec Provincial Government, as a guard in the goal at Back River. Both died of something connected with liver and kidney trouble.' It is claimed that the food they were compelled to devour to keep up their remarkable strength of muscle finally did for them. C’-vr” suffered considerably, it is said, the ’ spirit and natural ruggedness of tlie colossus resisting the inroads of the disease to the last inch. Barre was a big, good-natured lump of a man, who looked the picture oi, health no to the time he died. And. "still looking the picture oi health, he suddenly dropped dead. Tlie two best-known Freneh-Cana-tliaii strong men at the present are Cabana, -a former Montreal policeman; and Hector Decnrie, who is in the res. tan rant busines-s, and makes his headquarters iu St. Henri, a former suburb, but now i>art of Montreal. Of the two, Decario is probably the bettor straight out-and-out weight lifter Cabana is more of the trick lifter j allowing a loaded automobile to run over a bridge supported by his body, "and excelling in. other show stunts of a similar character. What makes one believe that Giroux is genuine in his claims is that while lie "asserts that lie can duplicate or better at least 10 of the weight-lifting feats most generally boasted of by the stars of to-day, lie ,1s not able to equal them in the foat of the “bentbreast,” although he hopes to come second to them in that. There is also a baby strong man in the limelight at present. This is Raby Marcel Plou-rde, who is 41 months old, weighs 331 b, is- tall, and lifts 3001 b on his back.
