Speaking at a party meeting at Windsor, Lord Birkenhead tfeclared there was some chance that we might lose the preference South Africa- had given us,' ancl which undoubtedly has been of great value to us. He said lie must make it plain that no British statesman would he entitled to complain at the withdrawal of preference. Unionists had always warned their political opponents that the latter’s policy was jeopardising just the one market in the world which wishes to trade with us in preference tc. anything else. He himself would consider the deathknell sounded to the one hope of building up to our commerce within the Empire if a refusal, such as is suggested, became general in the various parts of the Empire.—Reuter.
