NEW YEAR’S DAY.

1 MANY OUTINGS. STRATFORD RACES. BEACH, BUSH, AND MOUNTAIN. Appearances are that the New Year holiday will be finer than on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The series of low-pressure systems have apparently passed eastward, and with the barometer improving and a less humid atiposphere a period of sunshine will probably be experienced. Farmers who havo their hay will in many cases, if the Weather is fine, work bard to-morrow instead of observing the holiday, hut townspeople will welcome a fine day to enable them to go to their various holiday resorts.'* ■ There will be many directions in which the people can enjoy the holiday to-morrow, each according to his own inclination. The races, the beach, the river, the bush, the mountain and various sports—each will claim a section of the people, and all will be able to enjoy their choice to the full if the elements are kindly and propitious. One of the most popular of race meetings is that at Stratford to-mor--row and the succeeding day.. It always attracts a large crowd of enthusiasts from many parts, who there enjoy good keen racing and game struggles between the many fine, horses entered. This year the competition promises to be as keen and hard as ever. There will be two good days’ racing. There are no special arrangements made for the popular outlet to the ocean at Waingohgoro (Ohawe) beach, but. it i s an attraction in itself, aiid combined with the river and the little bits of native bush, serves to make an ideal place for picnics. . J Ngaere Gardens always draw a goodly crowd of picnickers. The enterprising proprietors, Messrs Lester. Bros., have shown very marked initiative in keeping the Gardens up-to-date, and they are always on the lookout for novelties to please and interest their hosts of patrons. To-morrow,, if fine, will see many hundreds wending their wav thither. Of all the attractions offered" 1 * by pleasure resorts, none is mare pleasant to visit than Dawson Fall’s Mountain House at lordly Egmont; The road is in good order,, and. a fine day is bound to see a large crowd bound for the mountain. Mr and Mrs Murphy are ideal hosts, and spare no" trouble' in .looking after the welfare of their visitors. ' ' '

lor those who do no,t leave town there are great opportunities for picnics at the King Edward Park Gardens. Bowling greens, tennis courts and cricket grounds ' will, all claim, their adherents. There is ample to interest all classes: ,

_ This evening the business streets of the various < towns, in, the . district will be crowded, and there are bound to be many who will “see the old year out” in the accustomed maimer, general hilarity being . usually associated with, such an occasion.
