FINED FOR. BOOKMAKING. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, Dec. 1. William Charles Burge was to-day fined £BO for using a fruit shop in Manners street as a common gaminghouse. Detectives stated that Burge was recognised as a bookmaker in Wellington, and his large shop was only a secondary - consideration. SOUTHLAND NEEDS RAIN. INVERCARGILL, Dec. 1. November was one of the driest and hottest months experienced in Invercargill for a considerable time, 2051 hours of sunshine being recorded at the Invercargill Observatory during the month. Some very hot days were experienced, one of the hottest being on November 15, when the temperature in the shade was 77 degrees. There has been a general absence of rain, and during the month only .84 inches of rain were recorded. Indeed, the prolonged spell of dry weather is causing anxiety to farmers, it being months since there has been a really heavy downpour.
