(By “Maecenas.”) The next meeting to interest sports, men in this part of the North Island is the Woodville meeting next week. ; After his fine showing at the Ash-'-hurst meeting, Puwhero returned a fino : dividend when he won . at the recent Feilding meeting. After the Levin meeting it was remarked in this paper that Gray, on Kenyon, clearly outrode C. Reed on Matin Bell. As Matin Bell won in hol-' low style at Feilding, it proved the statement correct. Despite the bad luck which the Wanganui Jockey Club have encountered during the last few years, they intend ; giving a thousand pound cup at their / next meeting. Quiescent was very unlucky in his only start at the ■■Feilding meeting, and with just an ordinary run njust have won easily. Quiescent should have;) plenty of support at Woodville, if a runner there. The win of Avola in the Feilding Clip was nothing of a luckv nature, as Bisogne’s daughter was always going like one with an excellent chance, and, responding, in the gamest possible manner to her rider’s call, Avola came on to win well. * Young L. A. Pine handled Avola? in a most proficient manner in the Feilding Cup. and over the last half furlong the lad’s riding' would have done credit to a Reed or Gray. , ,-- The province of Taranaki was well represented at the recent Feilding meeting, and although showing, tlieir usually good and consistent form they failed to reap as much prize money as they deserved, for with a little more, luck Glengariff, _ Miss Mickey, Rehutai and Lady Bentinck would certainly have won on the opening day instead of being defeated by very narrow mar- • gins. •The Stratford Racing Club advises that . nominations for their aniiufil meeting, to be. held on January 1 and 2, 1925, close on December 8. Total stakes to be raced for aggregate £3BOO, 'including Stratford Cup £750, Malone Memorial Handicap £450, no race being less than £l5O. The full programme is advertised in the Weekly Press, and owners are invited to communicate with the secretary, Stratford. It was stated in these cblums last week that there was little or no chance of the Australian Jockey Club forward*ing to New Zealand the evidence taken . ' in the famous Jones and McCarte-n case, and therefore it was pointed but that our appeal judges must let the sentence stand. This forecast was arrived at knowing that the case had been heard by the final and highest -racing tribunal in Australia. The recentlydelivered judgment of the. New Zealand racing judges has proved the forecast as a correct one. ; untimely and tragic death of A. J. McFlynn while riding at the Takapuna meeting removed "from our racecourses one of the best known and respected iockeys that has ever ridden in this Domiriion. Possibly the deceased was not so good as some of the horsemen that graced the . saddle, in New Zealand, but what he lacked, in this respect was balanced to a certain extent bv his honesty as a rider, find one is safe in stating that few riders reach the standard set by Flynn in this respect. ■ - ; In the writer’s opinion, W. Bowden is the most accomplished horseman at present riding over jumps in New Zealand, but many competent judges consider that he failed to show this :on. Miss Mickey in her first day’s effort at Feilding. - Deluge had every chance on the opening day at Feilding, when backed down to about- “2 to 1 on.” At the home turn Absurd’s son was going easily in front, hut when tackled failed to fight on.
