The stranding of the steamer Wakatu recalls a war-time incident (remarks an exchange). Entering .Lyttelton harbour the Wakatn disregarded the signals of a coast defence battery, which fired a shot across her bows. Somehow the news escaped the censor and reached Sydney. A few days afterwards came a cablegram from there, addressed to the coast defence commander (in his civil capacity as manager of a certain insurance company): “Please be careful in future, the Wa--katu is insured in our company.”
