GALE AT SEA.
BATTLE BY CHINESE STEAMER
SALOON FLOODED. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 31. The steamer Ling Now, from Chinese ports, with 470 through Chinese passengers for. Tahiti and South America, arrived' at Wellington at 6.30 p.m. on Saturday. She left Hong Kong on August 7 and had an uneventful voyage to Sydney. After leaving Sydney on August 25 the steamer had no sooner cleared Sydney Heads when she ran into a heavy gale, which increased in force as darkness fell and the ship had to battle against a terrific sea.
About midnight an exceptionally heavy wave swept her top decks like an avalanche, smashing the saloon doors, flooding the saloon, carrying away a companion ladder and doing other damage. No one was injured. JNext day the sea moderated and it was smooth to arrival.
lONIC DELAYED
WELLINGTON, Sent. 1. Ihe lonic, which arrived at 11 o’clock last night from London, was delayed by the heavy weather experienced during the past few days.
