A new feather has been planted in the cap of Mr. Henry Ford, who is showily by figures published in Industrial Peace to be not only the world’s most famous mass producer, but also its greatest eliminator of waste (repoits the London Daily Chronicle). His high distillation plants save £4,000,000 a year out of coal smoke, by rescuing the by-products of the carbon. He is now using a Belgian machine which is yielding a still larger percentage of these products, proved, by the. way, to contain 20t> separate ingredients. Ihree Swazi women have been sentenced to ■ death for the murder of a native constable in a mealie field in South Swaziland. .The constable was on special duty to stop thieving. He found the three women and two girls stealing mealies and arrested them. On the way to the gaol one woman asked permission to. drink. She lay down at a pool and refused to rise. The constable tried to make her get us, whereupon the other women and girls attacked him. PRINCESS OF CHINA AS HEROINE. e . -VIENNA, June 23 Signor Giacomo Puccini, whose “Tosca” and “Madame Butterfly” have long been favourites with the British opera-going public, gave some details of his new opera, “Turandot,” which is to be performed for the first time in the winter of 1924-25. The opera is based on a play by the Italian satirist, Gasparro Gozzi who flourished in the first half of the eighteenth century. Turandot is a Chinese princess whose suitors are submitted to a trial similar to that in the famous casket scene in “The - Ale reliant* Venice.” The Oriental settinf gives Puccini ample scope for his great* gift of emotional tone painting in the exotic vein, of which “Madame Butterfly is so striking an example. „ Rhmor Puccini has strong national feeling, and- incidentally confessed that his works only satisfy him in Italian, “the language of' song.” A play entitled “Turandot, Princess of China,” with by Busoni, was P’oduoed by Sir George Alexander at J ame s’ Theatre, London, in
