COMPETITIONS.

AT HAWERA. MUSICAL AND ELOCUTIONARY. OPENED THIS .MORNING. The third annual musical and elocutionary festival opened at the Opera House tins morning and continued throughout tlie day, there being a fairly large audience at the afternoon session. Competitors' from all parts of iaranaki are present, and it appears most of the entrants will take the stage in each class. The morning session was devoted entirely to elocution, the adjudicator, Mr A. H. R. Amess, of Stratford! giving his decisions as follow: Recitation (not humorous), under 14 years ; own selection.—V alerie Healey (Tawhiti), Patricia Ekd'ahl (Tawhiti), and Mavis Tapp (Hawera) to be recalled to-night. Thirteen competitors. Recitation (in character), under nine years; own selection.. —Eila Gunderson 1 3 Olive Good 2. Mr Will Hutchens was the adjudicator for the afternoon session, and gave his decision in the first class, as iol lows: Boys’ song, under 18 years: own selection. Malcolm Walker ] Robert S. Richards 2. Girls’ song, under 14 years: own selection. Betty Tonks, Marcia Sunderland, and Olga Hancock to be recalled to-night. To-night the competitions will start at 7 o’clock, when the class for baritone or bass solos will he taken. At the conclusion of this class there will be a short interval until 8 o’clock to allow those who wish to attend then to become seated by the time the finals of the day sessions come on.
