The South Africans’ total was quickly passed. Hendren was particularly vigorous, but bis exhibition was by no means flawless. He batted for 185 minutes and hit two sixes and fourteen fours. He was badly missed several times off Pegler. Gilligan was also lucky, being dropped thrice. The pair added seventy-five in forty-five minutes.
