VICE-REGAL.
HEAVY FINANCIAL BURDEN. (Bv Telegraph.—Special to Star.) V,'ELLINGTON, Aug. 20. It has been evident .in the cables that difficulty has arisen in appointing a. successor to the Governor-General through financial considerations. The holder of the position in New Zealand requires to expend a larger sum than is allowed by the Government for emolument and expenses. The GovernorGeneral’s salary is 1:5000, supplemented by £2500 for other charges. The State also maintains Government houses, £SOO being required this year for Auckland and £9OO for Wellington. The private establishment of the GovernorGeneral and all entertaining is a personal charge on the Governor-General, and inquiries show that although the Government is disinclined to amend the Civil List Act to increase the statutory payments, it has expressed its willingness' to the Home Government to bear sbirne portion of the establishment charges' of the Governor-General.
