The strike at thp metal manufacturers’ works at Port Kembla was settled after a compulsory conference. Work will be resumed on Monday. • A SEVERE PENALTY. MELBOURNE, Aug. 16. In sentencing Edward Joseph Killen to two years’ gaol and 10 strokes of the birch for robbery under arms, Mr Justice Mann said that robberies at the the revolver were becoming abominably prevalent, and some variation of the sentences seemed necessary. CHARGE OF MURDER. ADELAIDE, Aug. 16. As a result of the death of Michael Joseph Ryan after an altercation, John Andrew Jelley, farm labourer, has been arrested on a charge of murder. FIRES DUE TO BURGLARS. BRISBANE, Aug. 16. As a sequel to fire stories at joinery works it was discovered that burglars had endeavoured to blow open a safe. Two explosions were heard by residents shortly before the fire was discovered. CLERKS’ STRIKE SPREADING. PERTH. Aug. 16. The clerks’ strike at Fremantle assumed a larger and more serious aspect when the seamen, lumpers, tally clerics, horse drivers, and warehousemen generally became involved.
