BAIL REFUSED.

■ CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED MURDER (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 13. John Edward Jeffreys, a. carting contractor, of Southbrook, was arrested last night on. a charge of having attempted to murder his Avife, Florence Jeffreys, at Glentui. One Sunday in July Jeffreys went out on a pig shooting expedition, accompanied by his Avife, two children, and two Maoris. It is alleged that when he arrived at Glentui he sent the Maoris and the eldest child aAvay, and Avhile his wife Avas bending- down attending to the younger child, Jeffreys shoA-ed the woman over a cliff. When the Maoris returned Jeffreys said his Aidfe had fallen down the cliff. They went doAvn and picked her up. She was found in a badly bruised condition a hundred feet beloAv.

Jeffreys appeared in the Magistrate’s Court at Rangiora to-day and was remanded till August 22. Bail was refused.
