AMPLE MARGIN.
GOVERNMENT EXPENDITURE. MUST BE CAREFUL. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 15. ' In analysing the estimates of revenue and expenditure in the House today the leader of the Opposition (Mr T. M. Wilford) contended that there was, on the Government figures, ample margin for increased expenditure. Mr Massey replied that New Zealand was one of the best countries in the world, but he regretted the evident tendency on the part of people to mortgage the future, because sooner or later the prices of our produce would fall, and Ave must be prepared for that fall. He fully anticipated that next season would be a good one, but we must look further ahead than one season. He Avas extremely pleased to see that the industry of the people had not diminished, and he fully expected that next season’s exports Avould slioav a substantial increase, but Ave must be careful.
