Doubt has been expressed as. to whether opossums actually kill and devour native birds An experienced bushman writes that he observed in the Tauherenikau Valley an instance which appears rather unfavourable from the opossum’s point of view. He saw one of these animals spring from a wood pigeon lying dead on a branch. The pigeon’s head had been eaten. “The evidence is by no means conclusive,” states the writer, “but many a man has been hanged on more slender evidence.” A similar tragedy was seen recently near Hawera, where the beak, the heart, and a few feathers were all that remained of a small bird, which had evidently iust been killed and eaten. There was nothing to prove what was the devouring animal. On Friday, 26th September, the residents of Matapu intend making a tug effort to raise funds in aid of the school piano and tennis court.
