The. attention of all persons interested in the formation of a Municipal Band is drawn to the advertisement calling a meeting to be held in the Borough Chambers on Tuesdav next.
ft is not often that a deputation c-omes, cash in hand, with a substantial contribution towards the cost of work it wants a public body to do, but this was the case with Plimmerton residents who waited on the Hutt County Council a few days ago The leader of the deputation actually oroducea the notes, incidentally dropping some on the floor. The council was '-o taken aback that it immediately passed a resolution to get the work done at once, while councillors took the opportunity to laud the good example of self-help. “Cash customers, appeal to us,” said one councillor, and the chairman observed that they were always ready to help those who were lulling to help themselves. He congratulated the deputation on a ve>w fane example. A man who died at Burton-on-Trent m England, followed one of the strangi est occupations that could fall to any man’s lot. For nearly oO vears he had been engaged as a “smeller” at Messers. Bass and Co’s Brewery. As the title of his calling suggests, brewery “smellers” are engaged in their peculiar task by reason of their highly developed sense of smell. It is their duty to test the empty casks before they are refilled and to reject all “stinkers.” In this way thousands of barrels are tested by a single expert every week.
