SCHOOL ATHLETICS.
SOUTH TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIPS. DIXON BANNER. For the fourth year the competitions have been held in connection with the South Taranaki primary schools championships. The school which secures the best aggregate of points in all events takes the Dixon Banner, and this year it again fell to Hawera with 32J points. For the third time that school has its name inscribed on the banner. The second school, which was Manaia. Convent, secured Bennett and Sutton’s Cup. Yesterday, at the Hawera school, the banner and individual trophies were awarded, in the presence of Messrs M. F. Purser (president) of the Dixon Banner Club), S. J. Catran, B. Seaver. and J. E. Campbell (hon. sec.), and Mr. J. W. Harding (chairman of the school committee). • - The headmaster /Mr. F. A. Bates), in welcoming the donor and the committee of the competitions, said he was very proud of the success of the school, and that he was glad the com- ; petitions were to be amended so as to make it absolutely fair to all schools, by cutting them up into tpvo divisions according to numbers. In this way, he added, all schools had an even chance. He gave all a hearty welcome to the school.-
Mr: Harding congratulated the school on its success, and hoped they would be able to repeat it again. They were fortunate in having a headmaster of the calibre %f Mr. Bates Mr. M. F. Purser added his congratulations, and said that- in Mr. Bates they had a true sport, who would heartily join with the committee in furthering the best interests of sport. Mr. said the school was to be congratulated on having Mr. Bates, and that gentleman on having such af fineschool. He was certain they could confidently look 'to great things being done. He would be glad to offer another prize if required, because of the way the sports had taken on.. He considered the association was fortunate in having an hon. secretary like Mr. J. E. Campbell, and a president like Mr. Purser, and that much of the success avas due to their untiring energy and enthusiasm. He was glad the schools had been divided into groups, giving all a fair run. In conclusion he urged all to be good losers and to glory in the success of others, realising that so 1 long as they did their best they had no reason to feel ashamed even if beaten. He then formally presented the banner to the headmaster for the Hawera school, remarking that the name of Hawera now appeared three times and Manaia once.
Winners of trophies at Hawera school were as follow: Senior boys—C. Mills, first in 100 yards, 220 yards, and 220 yards hurdles; M. Clarke, first in 440 yards; H. Greenbanks, second in 440 yards; I. Hoddinott. first in 880 yards/ Junior boys—R. Smith, fi/st in 100 yards and third in 440 yards; E. Smith, second in 220 yard's; B. McLean, first in long jump; Barker, first in hop step and jump; V. Stratton, third in long junto and hop, step and jump. • ; Senior girls—D. Freeman, first in 7o yards and 120 yards; L. Smith, third m 75 yards; B. Hoddle, third in 120 yards. Hawera B won the boys’ junior relay and girls’ relay, and were second in the hoys’ senior. Hawera A were third in the junior Telay. .At the conclusion hearty cheers were given for the members of the sports committee for all the good work they had done and the keen interest they had taken in the schools sports.
