Lieut. S. M. Norman has relinquished command of the 94th Company, on account of his transfer to Mokau. Warrant Officer Oliphant Rowe has assumed command. Captain Oliphant, R.N.R., D. 5.0., assistant marine superintendent for the Union Steamship Company, is on a visit to New Plymouth
Mr. Robert Semple was a passenger by last evening’s express, en route for Waitara. Mr. Semple speaks under the Labour Party’s auspices at Waitara and New Plymouth this week-end returning early next week to Hawera And Patea, where he will deliver addresses.
The Rev. W. F. Stent, who has been vicar of Taihape for the past 10 years, has been appointed vicar of the Pahautahui parochial district. Mr Stent was for some years in Hawera. The Rev. Neville S. Barjiett, vicar of Upper Hutt and formerly of Patea, is to be transferred to Berhampore. The export of high-class stock from the Dominion is increasing, and a demand has recently set in from several countries. Last week the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., Hawera, shipped per the s.s. Athenic a number of stud Lincoln rams for the. Argentine. These rams were selected from the well-known flocks of the trustees of the late R. B. Hamilton, of Manutahi, and Mr J. W. Hughes, of Maxwelltown. The sheep selected were a very choice lot, and should help to strengthen the reputation New Zealand now enjoys in the Argentine. Another shipment is being made by this company in September. The above information ‘should give encouragement- to breeders of Lincoln sheep. Mr .Tas. A. Hume, line foreman at Stratford, who has been in Stratford for the past; twenty-six years, retired on Thursday ; from the Post and Telegraph Department after thirty-five years’ service. The local staff of the Department gathered in the postmaster’s room on Thursday, when a presentation of a travelling bag ivas made to Mr Hume. In the course of the speeches by the postmaster and others, it was stated that Mr Hume’s w-ork was highly appreciated, he being recognised throughout the Department as one of its hardest workers. Mr Hume suitably replied, thanking the staff for the -handsome present and the kind things said about him.
On the eve of his deoarture for Wellington, Mr -L. G. Papps, of the Hawera exchange staff, was met by his fellow-officers and was presented with a set of military hair brushes and a shaving outfit. ‘ The postmaster (Mr O’Gorman), in making the presentation, congratulated Mr Papps on his well-deserved promotion, and wished him every success in his new sphfere of duties. Mr Papps leaves on Tuesday for Wellington. Mrs A. F. Allan, M.A.. LL.B., editor of the women’s pages of the Melbourne Argus and the Australasian (a sister ofi Mr A. G.-Henderson, managing editor of the Lyttelton Times) has been appointed Australian delegate to the WoCongress convened by the League of Nations. Mrs Allan is a graduate of Canterbury College. She has many friends in Christchurch. She will leave Melbourne for London this week. Mrs Allan’s sister, Miss- C. K. Henderson, is at present in the United States with Mrs Don, of Dunedin, and the sisters will meet in London in September or October. They will return home by way of India, where another sister, Miss A. E. Henderson, is one of the missonaries of the Presbyterian Cburc-h of New Zealand.
