James Bertie, a survivor of the Whakapai wreck, reached Poet Awanui this morning. He was in a greatly exhausted state when pulled out of the water. The cook, Harry Millar, was the last to be washed off the vessel, and, clinging to a spar, drifted within twenty yards of the boach. A native swam out to save him, but when close to him he disappeared. Bertie states that before the capsize occurred the vessel became so full of water that it was quite unmanageable. She drifted into the passage between East Island and the mainland, and Capaia Bonner, fearing she wonld go on the rocks, dropped anchor. Then, as she swung round a heavy sea caught her and* turned her over. Bertie was the first to ba washed off, and seized a piece of of wood, which assisted him ashore. NAPIER.
