Land Tenure in England.
The groat development of the wheatfields and railways m America, and the newly discovered methods of importing iresh meat into England are steadily causing a permanent fall in rents. Before lung an English writer says the “ bit:er cry ”of the landlord will be heard alongside the complaints of the peasant, and by the force of circumstances the Government will be compelled to sift the land puzzle in which most of our social and economic ills have root. In recent years efforts have been made to apply the cooperative principle to agriculture, but with little or no success ; and the difficulty i, renewed down to theaiternalive of present proprietary, or something of the nature of nationalization, it seems that the tenants of this connfry are not prepared for eouibat which will arrive sooner that they expect with the compensation grabbers. By-and-by, the landlords see there will be no room for them, aud their defence societies are actually considering lhe ways and tneans of securing exorbitant purchase-money or Nta’c suovention for property, tne value of which is deerea-ing by leaps. Why is at that in every village throughout I his country branches of a land league are not established ? J'he landlords have their ’* leagues ” and “ plans, ” and they intend to u<e them too—a fact which agricultural workers may learn some day to their cost.—English paper.
