FIRE IN A THEATRE.

BURNED TO THE GROUND. NO CASUALTIES. London, December 29. About half an hour after the evening's performance had been brought ta a conclusion in the G: and Theatre last evening a fire broke out in the flies, some of the light scenery having become heated during the perf rrmance. Immediately the alarm was given a detatchment of firemen from the North Metropolitan Fire Brigade, whose station is only a few yards distant, were summoned, but perceiving that the fire had gained too much headway they eonflnel their exertions to preventing the fire from spreading to the adjacent buildings, lot the theatre ia situated in the midst of a large block of buildings, and dis. aetrous result, would have followed the spread ot the fire. After heroic exertions the build, ings .joining the theatre were preserved, but the theatre itself was destroyed. The Grand Theatre is situated in Islington Green, and this is the saooud lime it has been destroyed as in 1881, it being then known as the Philharmonic, a Are broke out and gutted the building. It was fortunate the tire d.d not occur during the performance as there Was a large audience present, nearly 2,fi00.
