The Mayoral Installation,
A srxstAL meeting ot ths Borough Connell was held at noon yesterday tor the purpose of inatalling tha new Mayor (Captain Tooker). There were present The Mayor (Major For* ter), and Crs joyoe, Lewis, Lucas, Morgan) and Tucker, and a number of ratepayers.
Major Porter said the usual course was be, ing taken, in vacating the chair, as be was about to do, he wished to make a few remarktt As on previous occasions, ho felt regret on leaving the Councillors and Council with which he had so long identified himself. If was impossible for any gentleman to fill tha office of Mayor without feeling tbe responsi* bility of his position. It was different to that of a Councillor who could be more independent, while the Chairman had to moderat* his own feelings when he would vsry often I* inclined to speak out. He had found hi* duties during the past year very much lightened by tbe conduct of Councillors, and he had not once felt himself called npon to check a Councillor or call him to order. H( believed thia was a great deal owing to th* Councillors themselves being experienced and well up in the rules of debate. He had vacated the office owing to want of time. He quitted the chair with a feeling ot friendliness to all the Councillors. Having occupied ths office so often, some might think one would get used tu the regret at leaving Councillors, but he could not pet used to it. The gentleman who was to succeed him was one well able to fulfil the position, having bad long experience in the Council, and all the attainments necessary, and be felt sure that he was quite capable to fulfil with credit to himself the duties devolving upon him as Mayor. Having made the necessary declaration Captain Tucker said that he felt the responsibility ot the position in which he would bs placed, and he hoped with the assistance ot the Councillors, that their connection during the present year would not be an unpleasant one. Of course he could hardly hope to fulfil the duties of office in the same manner as Major Porter had done, because ths latter had so often previously occupied the position. It was not at all likely that bis (Captain Tucker’s) first trial would be as snocessful, but if they could work harmoniously as they had done in the past, he had little misgiving as to what the future might be. He felt indebted to his brother Councillors for the manner in which they had always treated him during the two terms of office he had held in the Council. They had never had a dispute that remained two minutes in hie mind, and when they differed in opinion had always given one another credit for the beat of intentions. If they kept in that frame of mind in the future there was no doubt they would continue to work together as well as they had done in the past. Captain Tucker then took the chair. Mr Lewis rose to move a vote of thanks to the late Mayor, which ho felt sure would be endorsed by all present. Ha quite believed that Major Porter would regret leaving ths Council after having been with them so long, and he (Cr Lewis) felt the same regret, not so much on account of Major Porter vacating the position of Mayor—but because they would lose his services as a Councillor, un i his advice and judgment, which were eomeUinos necessary. Major Porter returned thanks, and the meeting adjourned.
