The stonewalling of the Bepresentation Bill la Committee was relieved by several members " dropping " into poetry. ' First the level beaded member for Port Chalmers had a fight at the member for St. Albans, Mr W. P. Beeves, for the blind following of the Vogel lead. It was to this effect :— •• St. Albans had a little lamb, Whose fleece was white as snow, And everywhere Sir Julius went The lamb was sure to go." The “ lamb " bided his time and took his revangs on tbs member for Mount Ida, Mr Scobie MacKenzie, for “ backing down " on Mr Stewart’s amendment, and helping the the Government cut of their fix. Ha depicted the Premier as soliloquising as follows 11 Who picked me up when ere I fell, And kissed the part to make it well My Scobie,” It is said that Mr Scobie MacKenzie then availed himself of the earliest opportune? to indignantly repudiate the ignoble part aseigned him. for as the poet says, " He kisses with the driest lip."
