A PUBLIC PARK.

The project of securing a site for a public park has been often talked of, but until lately there has never been mifeh prospect of the idea taking definite or practical shape. At one time it was thought the Turf Club would have succeeded in procuring a course near the town, but the Club considered it better to leave the matter to private enterprise than to go so far out of their own special line. The matter has now been taken up by some enterprising individuals, and the success of the undertaking is already almost assured, A most eligible site, containing one hundred acres, has been secured at a cost of Zl9OO. of which a / 100 deposit has already been paid. A company is to be formed with a capital of /’s.ooo in £1 shares, and will be registered a joint-stock company as soon as the necessary preliminaries are completed. Over 2,000 shares have already been subscribed for. It has been resolved to at once proceed with the clearing and ploughing of the land, and tenders have been invited for that purposeWhen this work is completed the ground will be levelled and sown down in grass, and a race-course will be laid off and sites for grandstand, etc., selected. Then trees will be planted and everything done with the view of making the place suitable for large out-door gatherings, such as agricultural shows, race meetings, footba 1 and cricket matches, friendly society and other picnics, &c. As there is no public place suitable for any of these purposes convenient to the town, the formation of the Park Company should meet with every suppo t—indeed the wider the distribution of shares the better it will be in the interests of the public, for it will preclude tne possibility of anything in the shape of a monopoly.
