The County Chairmanship.

MR. CLARK ELECTED. A meeting of the recently-elected members of the County Council was held shortly after noon yesterday. There were present: —Crs Coleman, Clark, Wethered, Wallace, Twohey, Orr, and Gannon. Mr J. "Warren, County Clerk, took the chair, and asked for nominations

for the position of Chairman of the Council for the ensuing term. Cr Wallace then rose and said: I have great pleasure iu proposing as Chairman, one of the oldest members of the Council—Cr Gannon. I think that he will make a suitable Chairman. He is a member of the Harbor Board now, but still, if he were elected as our Chairman, it would cause another new member for the Harbor Board to be elected. And I think we all know that Mr Gannon if elected, will carry out the duties of the Chair with fair play toward all the ridings. Therefore 1 have great pleasure in proposing him. Mr Coleman: I have pleasure in seconding the nomination, and in doing so I think it only right to say that I consider Cr Gannon, being an old member, ought to be elected County Chairman. He has the most complete knowledge of all previous business that has been transacted by the Council, and also a knowledge of the procedure. Cr Wethered: Twill propose Mr John Clark.

Cr Twohey: I will second that, and in doing so might say that judging by the way Mr Clark conducts his private business I have no doubt he will make a very good Chairman. The Chairman: Is there no other nomination ? There being no response the votes were taken.

The Chairman : Do you want to vote, Mr Clark ? Cr Clark (hesitatingly) : Yes. The Chairman: Will you vote, Mr Gannon ? Cr Gannon : No, Mr Chairman.

The result was :— Clark : Wethered, Twohey, Orr, and Clark. Gannon: Wallace, and Coleman. The former was declared elected.

Cr Clark: 1 can only thank you for the honor you have done me. I shall try to carry out the duties to the best of my ability. At the same time, being Chairman of the County council also means being a member of the Harbour Board. If 1 find that being a member of the two Boards takes up more time than I can actually spare J shall put my resignation tn the members’ hands, but 1 shall do my best to fulfil the position. Cr Gannon: I beg to congratulate Mr Clark upon his election as Chairman. He has had some experience in the Council, and I have very great pleasure in being in the Council with him.
