COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Council, met. At 2.30 yesterday Afternoon. Present: Cre Chirk (chair* • man), Stubbs, Wethered, Orr, Wallace, Twohey, and Coleman. correspondence, Mr C. Dette wrote stating that 4 coach Would be leaving for Walroi shortly, and invited that some of the councillors should make the inaugural trip.—Letter received with thanks. Mr Boland wrote asking for tha loan of 40 tails for use on the Whataupoko,—The request was granted, the applicant to guarantee, the return of them by depositing £5 its sebarittj any damage to be deducted from the deposit. C. Lambert wrote revoking any authority givdn td the Kaiterataht ferryman to land passengers dn hi! property.—lt was decided that Crs Wethered and Orr see Mr Devery and make arrangements where the ferry is to be placed. The Waimata and Whataupoko Road Boards wrote asking for permit* «ion to use the County Council chambers for the purpose of holding their meetings—Agreed to, the rent to bb 5a a meeting. Te Koti, Waiapu ferryman, wrotd stating that he was willing to take £5 a year for working the ferry, the Council to find a boat. The Council decided not to find a boat.

The Chairman of the Turanganui Road District telegraphed that they were advised that the special order merging the Board, was illegal and asking whether the Council would ■ommence de novo or wait until the Board took action. The Clerk said certainly a technical error had occurred, and that error wa* iue to an oversight by himself, but if >roceedings were taken the Tologa ratepayers would probably lose £5O. Cr Stubbs proposed that the Coun* eil commence de novo. He deriounqed the action of tbe Road Board as being igainst the interests of tbe majority of the ratepayers, and reiterated his former arguments against the existence of the Board, and said the money 'iad virtually been squandered by the members of the Board.

Cr King agreed with Cr Stubbs, and on his suggestion the petition of the ratepayers was read. In answer to a question the Engineer said the main road was main* tamed by the County. Cr Coleman seconded, and it was decided to grant the prayer of the petition, and take the necessary steps to abolish the Board. tenders. The following tenders for dog collar* were received :— Adeane and Primrose, £53; M. Hall, (1) £59 7s 7d ; (21 £56 6s ; (3) £5l Ils 3d ; W. Morgan, £5O. The tender of Mr Morgan- wm accepted. jayments. Accounts totalling £lO3 were passed for payment. DAYS OF MEETING. It was decided to hold thfe meeting every three weeks on Friday at 2 p.m. BORROWING FBOFOSAt. Cr Stubbs said he had made, a pfd* posal to borrow £12,000 under the Local Bodies Loans Act, but he wiS sorry to say there was little chance nBw of borrowing the money. It wa* to be regretted the late Council did not borrow the money. He would now withdraw the motion. MAINTENANCE OF BOADS. Cr King gave notice that the Eri* gineer lay out the roads of the county in sections, so as to be able to lay data before the Council by the next meeting so as tender* could be called for the maintenance of all roads,

Crs Stubbs and Wallace thought the Council should first affirm the principle. CrKing then proposed that the road* be maintained by tender. Cr Twohey seconded. Cr Stubbs thought the principle wa* a good one, was very desirable, and would relieve the Engineer of a good deal of worry and annoyance. Or Coleman opposed the motion, not that he was against the principle, but he did not think they should go 10 far as to bring the whole County under the motion. The Chairman said the motion would only be given effect to from time to time as the Council may desire. NEW WORKS FOB THE YE AB. The following sums were allocated for new works in the several riding* Waiapu, £1475 ; Tologa, £550; Waimata, £736 ; Gisborne, £945 ; Te Arai, £850; Waikohu, £850; total, £5406.

RETURNING OFFICERS AND FEES. Mr Quigley (Whautaupoko) and Mr McKay (Waimata) were appointed returning officers for the present year, the fees to be the same as hitherto. DOG BEGISTBATION. Mr Dover was re-elected Dog Registrar on the same terms as the previous year, with the alteration that he is only to get Is. per head for dogs registered in the Council Chambers.
