THE COUNTY COUNCIL.

At the conclusion of the County Council meeting on Thursday Cr Gannon took occasion to remark on the want of interest shown in the forthcoming County elections. That there is an utter absence of interest taken in the matter is clearly demonstrated by the fact that throughout the whole of the County there will only be one contest for a seat—Tologa Riding. As far as the Gisborne Riding is concerned we can understand that there was no opposition to the gentlemen nominated, for they will only hold office until the necessary arrangements have been made to constitute Whataupoko a new riding. One of the members at present representing the Gisborne Riding will be given to Whataupoko. so it will be necessary to have a fresh election. The alteration of the representation is only fair, as it will give more equality to one part of the County as against the other. Cr Gannon made some very flattering remarks as to the manner in which Mr G. L. Sunderland had carried out his duties as Chairman, and regretted that the new Council could not look forward to Mr Sunderland’s re-election. As Cr Gannon has said, there can be no doubt that Mr Sunderland has acted with impartiality and fairness during the term of his office, and it would not be too much to say that he has perhaps been the best Chairman the Council has ever had. His vote on the representation question proves an impartiality not often found in members of local bodies. Again the East Coast settlers have to thank him for his casting vote on the Tologa telephone proposal, brought forward by Cr Gannon. We have not always been in accord with Mr Sunderland, but common fairness compels us to endorse much that has been said in his favor.
