County Matters.
Sm, —I have for the past few months watched with interest the passing tide of events. It is sur. arising to note how rapidly public opinion is being educated to the danger which now besets our whole political system. Selfishness and thriftlessness have nearly been our ruin, and the sooner the position is understood the sooner a remedy is likely to be applied. But while we are considering a cure for a present disease, we should not allow little pimples to break out iu fresh places. Here, then, we have the County Council proposing to dive into another excess of borrowing while at the same time the ratepayers are grumbling at the present rates, and the Council has declared it is not able to pay its men a fair day’s wages. The Council has certainly shown wisdom in deferring the borrowing question, and they would perhaps have shown more wisdom if they had at ouee thrown the motion out. I hopo, too, that the labor affair will not be lost sight of in the coming County election. Unfortunately struggling working men have not much chance against the landed interests, but combination may do a good deal towards effecting a desired result. I think it is only necessary to point to the prime movers in this intended borrowing to warn ratepayers from giving it their support.— , I am, &c., Settler.
