A late cable message states ;—A deputation from, Kidderminster has presented Mr Gladstone with a handsome carpet. They congratulated him on his Irish policy, ai d condemned the repressive meatttres, adopled by the Govi rnment. Mi - Gladstone ac* cepted the preseniation, and in thanking them for the gift said, though he had suffered a crushing defeat in the elections of 1880, yet the recent elections indicated that public opinion was changing, and he was hopeful of soon returning to power The secession of Mr Goschen and other Liberals had tended to greatly weaken the Liberal party, but those people were now placed in a most deplorable position in being connected with the Conservative party. Referring to the Irish question, he said a settlement of the difficulty would be speedily arrived at, and he was delighted that the Tories had forstalled the Liberals in bringing about that settlement.
