Gisborne Cricket Club.
The annual meeting of the above Club was held on Saturday last at the Masonic Hotel. Present; Messrs Johnstone, Bullen, Bellers, Evans, Booth, A. Bees, Ballantyne, Morgan, Lewis, Lysnar, Lemuel, Staite, Jones and others. The following report was read and adopted During the season 40 ordinary members joined the Club, being an increase of five upon the last season. Three honorary members were also enrolled. ' Eight matches (besides one Married and Single, and some scratch ones) were played, of which the Club won four and lost four. Six of these matches were with teams picked in town, one with a Patutahi team, and one with Wairoa. This latter was an attempt to inaugurate matches with Clubs outside the district, but the result was scarcely satis* . factory. Many promises of support were given, but at the last minute withdrawn, and only six local men arrived at the Wairoa. The match, as was to be expected under the circumstances, was lost. The balance sheet shows an expenditure of £l2 13s 9d against an income of £l2 2s adding to which the balance from last aiason (£1 14s lOd) leaves a balance in hand of £1 3s Id. While it is satisfactory to know that the Club is not running into debt it must be admitted that moneys received were not sufficient to carry on the Club in an efficient manner, much necessary material having to be dispensed with, and the best done under the circumstances. But notwithstanding this and the great drawback of not having a proper ground, the Club is still forging ahead. A little apathy was certainly shown during the season and it was extremely difficult to always get full teams, but on the whole we have not much to complain of. An opposition Club is required to bring out the energies of our members, and this we are glad to hear we are to have in the coming season. The thanks of the Club are due to all those gentlemen who have lent a helping hand to the Committee, and particularly to Mr Bees for the use of his roller during the season.”
A motion by Mr Lewis, seconded by Mr Evans, that the subscription be 10s 6d, was carried, and the subscription for honorary members was raised to a guinea. The following officers were then elected :—President, Mr A. McDonald ; Vice Presidents, Messrs A. W. Croft, W. L. Bees, and H. J. Finn ; Auditor, Mr B. N. Jones; Secretary aad Treasurer, Mr Ballantyne ; Committee, Messrs Lewis, Bellers, A. Bees, and J. Nolan. Mr Croft was appointed honorary captain. ft was decided to leave the question as to putting the ground in order to the Committee who will interview the Borough Council with a view to pre-
venting the ground being crossed by persons living across the Whataupoko. It was decided that the season should be opened on the Ist of next month, to be played at the Hapara should the Club’s ground be not then available for play.
