The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE. Published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, Morning.

Saturday, July 30, 1887. MR LOCKE'S MEETING.

Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou aim'at at be thy country's. Thy God a, and truth's.

With reference to the meeting called for this evening at McFarlane’s Hail, when Mr S. Locke will address the East Coast electors on the political questions of the day, we have a word or two to say. At political meetings held recently in different parts of the Colony, notably at Christchurch, candidates and speakers generally have been subjected to much stupid and unmanly interruption. Of course we all know that feelings run high sometimes, and, for some men, it is difficult to repress strong outward tokens ol dissent, but systematic and deliberate interruptions only serve to disgrace the community. Now that the election campaign has begun in earnest and candidates have girded up their loins for the fight, let us good folks of Gisborne show that a con. test can be conducted in a manly, straightforward way, and pride ourselves upon not-having copied the rampant rowdyism of some of the Christchurch and Auckland gatherings.

Let all three men haye a fair show, let us listen patiently to what they have to say, criticise fairly and without malicious misrepresentations and acrimonious aspersions, and let the verdict be given at the polls. We are sorry that our contemporary has already shown its spite against Mr McDonald by a disgraceful attempt to jeer at his Scotch accent.

It was an imbecile attempt at wit, and was in reality in miserably bad taste. For ourselves we shall give all a fair hearing, although we cannot disguise our preference for Mr McDonald.

But as to to-night’s meeting, and those that follow it, let us give the larger towns a lesson in decent behaviour. They are sadly in want of it.
