A Comical Story.

[Special io Standabd.] Wellington, last night, There is a very comic story in circulation in town. Four officers in the Public Works in consequence of the retrenchment proposals received their conge, Three received their compensation without demur, the fourth who appears not to have been a favourite with the Ministerial head was told that his compensation could not be granted until his claim had been submitted to Parliament. The ill-favoured one knew that this meant shelving him. so yesterday when Mr Richardson was on board the steamer waiting to take his departure for the South, the discharged civil servant was seen coming along the wharf with the traps. When he got on board Mr Richardson said “ Hello, where are you off to?" “ Wherever you address your constituents xn your district that’s where I am going to, and I intend to give them and you too a bit of my mind.” This was portentous. The Minister didn’t like the look of things, so he called the Under-secretary who, as is customary, had gone down to the steamer to see his Minister off. and whispered something to him, which in turn the Undersecretary whispered to the discarded civil servant, the result of which was the discarded one took himself and his traps ashore, and has since received his compensation, which will render it unnecessary to submit his claim to Parliament. The compensation man is now on his way to Sydney, where I am told he has received a very lucrative billet.
